It is also a great idea to check your local library.  More and more libraries are offering more resources to the public they serve.  My local branch system offers online language software through mango and powerspeak for free, as well as internet courses for everything from aroma therapy to business mathematics.  And on top of the books they have available many are adding eBooks and audio-books online and access to databases and sites like consumer reports for free just for having a library card.
